Embracing Fall in the Dining Room:
When it comes to fall decorating, I don’t shy away from color. Sure, I love subtle neutrals too but I say bring on the orange in October!
Since we painted our dining room navy, (Sherwin Williams – Naval), decorating with the complementary color of orange made sense. Plus, fall is really the only time of year I use orange in my home. It’s fun to embrace some seasonal color inside when the leaves are turning outside.
With all my blue and white porcelain and china, I think the pops of orange give the room some life. Since my dining room is very traditional, the vibrant fall colors keep things feeling fresh. By the way, have you noticed that “brown” furniture is becoming popular again? It’s a good thing I didn’t waste all my time painting the wood when I made over my dining room last year. Not that my husband would have let me anyway…
On each place setting, I kept it very simple with a single orange pumpkin. In the past, I’ve decorated fall tables using white pumpkins in the same way. Why not use the seasonal items that are readily available?
blue and white plates / rattan charger
To go along with my blue and white dishes, I mixed in some ginger jars and some orange velvet pumpkins. I love the soft texture of those velvet pumpkins…so perfect for fall.
hurricane / similar table runner / similar place mats
Instead of using flowers for my fall centerpiece, I chose a simple glass hurricane. Dining by candlelight is so cozy, especially with the sun setting so early these days. Honestly, I am not too thrilled about the early sunsets …but what can you do?
Before long, we’ll be turning our clocks back and it will be completely dark by dinner. I guess our grilling days are numbered…
Since it’s that time of year where we are spending more time indoors, we might as well make our interior spaces as inviting as possible.
Now that I’ve set my dining room for fall, maybe we’ll be inspired to use the space more often.
From the table, you can see another area where I added some fall decor…
Embracing Fall on the Bar Cart:
For my bar cart in the corner, I carried over the orange and navy blue colors to coordinate with my fall table. If you don’t own a bar cart, I highly recommend buying one. They’re so much fun to decorate! Last year, I experimented with 3 different styles for fall and I even did a Halloween version.
To decorate my fall bar cart this year, I painted some craft pumpkins using navy paint. Since I had been seeing all these cute gingham pumpkins everywhere, I decided to paint one myself. (Here are my tips for painting a buffalo check pumpkin) To make that pumpkin stand out, I highlighted it on a cake stand surrounded by some faux bittersweet.
For the smaller pumpkin next to it, I attempted to copy a Serena and Lily wallpaper. Instead of using regular paint, I simply used a blue paint pen over an already white pumpkin. On the bottom shelf, you can see a blue and white striped pumpkin. For that one, I was inspired by the Dash and Albert rug in my home office. Inspiration is everywhere!
Once again, I mixed in some orange and textures to coordinate with the fall table.
Embracing Fall Decor on the Sideboard:
Across the room, I continued the pops of orange on my autumn sideboard table.
similar ginger jar / ginger jar option / similar wheat bundles
One large orange chrysanthemum makes the perfect focal point between the two lamps. For some height on the lower shelf, I bought two wheat bundles from Homegoods. Originally, I was going to change to color of the ribbon but then realized I loved the way it coordinated with greenery on the mums. Isn’t it nice when the easy way ends up being the best way?
After a few days, I might end up moving the mums outside to decorate the porch for fall. After all, I am not sure how long mums will survive in the house…especially with my black thumb!
Thanks for stopping by to see how I am embracing fall in the dining room! Hopefully, I’ve inspired you to add some fall color to your home.

Thanks Kristie! Each year I think I will go more neutral but I crave those fall colors!
This is beautiful, Shelley, There’s just something about blue and orange together and that checked pumpkin is the cutest!
Thanks, Kim! I’ve had fun painting pumpkins this year. Now, I think I might make some for the porch too.
Love, love, love this gorgeous mix of blue, white and orange Shelley! it’s all so gorgeous. I just read that dark and wood furniture is coming back and it’s really exciting. Your dining room is all really elegant. Hope your fall season is a great one, CoCo
Thanks so much, Coco! I always seem to be drawn towards vibrant colors for fall. And hooray for the brown furniture. I guess now is the time to score some great pieces in consignment stores..before the word gets out! Enjoy your fall as well!
I just love the orange and navy together.
Thank you so much! I am glad you like it too!
Happy Fall Shelley. I am loving the orange and navy Fall combination. I have used those colors in our Fall home as well. I love your home it is so beautifully decorated. Your tablescape is amazing. Thanks for sharing. I have pinned to drool over it over and over.
Thank you for your kind words, Terri. And thank you for pinning too! These blog hops are always so much fun…
Wowza, your navy walls look amazing. I couldn’t do it for lack of light but goodness, I wish I could. The pops of orange are the perfect fall accent color with all of your other blue and white pretties. And now I want a bar cart! It’s all so cute. Pinned
Thanks for the enthusiastic comment, Cindy! My dining room doesn’t get a ton of light so it can be a bit difficult to photograph…especially since it’s been cloudy for days! I am glad you like what I have done in there. Thanks again!
I read the same thing recently about brown wood furniture getting popular again. Yay for that! I always enjoy your tablescapes when you feature your blue and white china. Gorgeous with the pumpkins too! Navy and orange look like best friends here!
Cheers to the brown wood furniture! Thanks Michelle…I am happy to read that you enjoy blue and orange as well!
The pop of orange works so well with the navy. Your dining room is so classic and lovely, but not fussy. And those pumpkins! Love the gingham.
Thanks Courtney! I love orange and navy together…and had fun painting those pumpkins. I think I will do more for the porch.
I love orange with blue willow. Gorgeous.
Thanks Katie! I do love the blue and orange combo!
I always enjoy seeing how you decorate your home for the season, Shelley. Orange is the perfect contrast to your beautiful dishes (my mom has that pattern). I’m with you on it getting dark early, it is nice for lighting candles and feeling cozy, but it sure does make the day seem so short. My body says, “Go to sleep” the instant it gets dark.
Yes, the early sunsets make me tired too! Thanks for your sweet comment, Paula. I know you like decorating with color as well and there are so many pretty things to work with this time of year. Thanks again and have a great week!
This is beautiful. I love the navy mixed in with the fall colors. It’s a great combination.
Thank you! It’s always fun to experiment with color combinations. Thanks for stopping by!
I can really relate to your style! My dining room is painted Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore. This is also the only time of year I use orange, too! The pops of orange pumpkins on your pretty blue plates is great! Your table looks so elegant and ready to have guests sit down to a lovely fall meal! Bravo!
I love Hale Navy too! It was actually one of the colors I considered but since I don’t get a ton of light in there, I went a little lighter. Thank you so much for your kind words. I had fun creating the fall table. Great hopping with you!
What a gorgeous table. I adore blue and orange paired together!
Thanks, Laura! It’s a fun color combo, isn’t it?
Shelley, your blue dining room looks so warm and elegant for fall! I’m getting lots of ideas because we also have a dark blue dining room with cream/white wainscotting. Plus, I own a set of rattan chargers just like yours! We have twin dining rooms! I agree that orange really pops in rooms like this. Happy to be hopping with you again!
Yay for twin dining rooms! Ours used to be red and we just painted it SW Naval last year. I love how changing a wall color can open you up to all kinds of new decorating ideas. I don’t think I would have used all those orange pumpkins if the room was still red! Great hopping with you too!
Shelley, what a beautiful dining room and tablescape! I have those napkins 😊 I love your bar cart too. Happy Fall! Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction
Thanks so much, Cecilia! Happy fall and so nice to hop with you!
Shelley, This is the first year I embraced the orange with my dark blue wall. I love how beautiful the blue and orange look in your dining room!

Thank you so much, Cristina! I had fun pulling it together and enjoyed using orange in there this year.
This is absolutely beautiful! And such great inspiration for painting pumpkins to work perfectly in your dining room! Love it!
Thanks so much, Nancy! I thought I’d try something new this year…
Your beautiful home has me so inspired for fall decorating. Love the orange pumpkins with your blue and white china! I cannot wait to get back into my home so I can start holiday decorating! Happy Thursday, my friend ~
Thanks Kristy! I love to decorate in the fall because there are so many natural things (and colors) to work with! I hope you get back in your home asap!
I love, love, love your dining room, so pretty and your tablesetting is stunning. I really loved seeing how you styled your bar cart too and those blue and white pumpkins are fabulous.
Awe, thanks so much Marty! That bar cart has become one of my favorite things to decorate. I think I am going to be painting even more pumpkins – so much fun and so easy! Thanks again for your sweet comment!
Your dining room looks gorgeous for fall with the blue and orange together! I love the classic elegance and simplicity. Your unpainted wood furniture is perfect with the white wainscot and the dark navy walls, truly timeless! I have had my eye on those wheat bundles with the olive green ribbon for weeks at our TJ Maxx and just decided today that I need to go back and check if there are any left. Green is my favorite color, so I was really attracted to that ribbon. Your bundles look beautiful with the green ribbon complementing the
mums.
Beautiful bar car too, love those painted pumpkins!
Thank you so much for embracing fall with us!
Thank you, Amber! Yes, those wheat bundles are so great to decorate with – go back to TJ Maxx and buy them! You know you will use them. Once again, thank you for hosting this tour. I have loved visiting all the pretty houses and seeing how everyone is embracing fall!
Hi Shelly! I love how you used hues of orange in your blue and white room to represent Fall. Your tablescape is gorgeous and your bar cart is the bomb! So happy to be on tour with you!
Thanks so much, Michelle! I do enjoy using color this time of year. Great touring with you!
I love the new color of your dining room. The orange pumpkin is the perfect pop of color with your navy! I too only use orange for fall and Halloween.

Shelley, your dining room is so dramatic with the navy walls. Your blue and white dishes would look wonderful at any time. Adding the orange pumpkins to each place setting does evoke fall and adds the perfect complimentary color. I always love how you style your bar cart. It gives me ideas for mine.
Your tablescape is so beautiful! I love the blues, browns and oranges. I love the way you carry on those colors through the rest of the house. The blue and white decorated pumpkins are just the best!! I’m so inspired!
I love your oranges and blues! I’ve been thinking of using Naval somewhere in our home and your gorgeous walls have convinced me! Thanks for the beautiful inspiration!

Your dining room is absolutely fabulous! I am all about the blues these days and you have me wanting a navy wall somewhere!
Thank you so much, Christy! My dining room was red for many years and I’ve been so happy with the change to navy. You should definitely add a navy wall somewhere! Thanks for swinging by!
What color white did you use on your walls with Naval?
The white is Benjamin Moore Decorators White.
