Decorating Progress (Foyer Update & Interior Trends)
Hello friends and welcome to the Saturday Spotlight! Each week, I like to highlight a different home decor theme or topic to inspire you. Since I’ve been making some updates to my foyer, I thought I’d share my decorating progress along with my thoughts on a few interior trends.

Decorating Progress – Updates to My Foyer:
Make changes and then reevaluate…
For me, decorating is a process of trials and errors. Sometimes, I get lucky and choose the perfect piece right away and other times, I have to audition furniture and decor until I get it right. For instance, I mentioned recently that I replaced my console table with a blue antique dresser…which was love at first sight. As we all know, one thing leads to another because I then wanted to replace my mirror above it. After shopping my home for a mirror, I realized I wasn’t happy with my existing options. Of course, I didn’t want to spend more money so I lucked out when this gold mirror went on sale at Ballard Designs! So, on with the decorating progress in my foyer…
Besides the sale price, I chose the mirror for the large size and the gold color which matches the hardware on the dresser. My previous mirror had a reddish-brown wood tone that coordinated with my previous foyer table…and the brown tones of my wood floor. Even though I love this gold mirror, I’m not 100 percent sure it’s staying in this spot. I feel like I might need more contrast or something. Maybe I should just work on my styling a little…so we’ll see. If I don’t keep the mirror in the foyer, I could move it to the dining room because it would look gorgeous against the navy blue wall color!
Next step in my foyer decorating progress – choose a lamp…
Now that I have the mirror in place (for now), I’m thinking about what kind of lamp I’d like for the spot. To me, the white lamp gets a little lost with the light colored walls. I’m either going to go with a different color lamp, something more substantial or maybe just a new lampshade. Recently, I’ve seen some cute pleated lampshades so a colorful one might brighten up the existing lamp. Though, I don’t want to go to traditional. Once again, I’ll have to try a few options before committing. Stay tuned…And if you have any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment!
Decorating Progress – Seasonal Changes:
Add seasonal updates to keep your home fresh…
Just like last year…and every year, I recently shared my Most Popular Blog Posts of 2024 and My Favorites of 2024. Many of those blog posts highlight seasonal decorating…which is a great way to update your home with little effort. Instead or remodeling rooms or tackling any big projects, just bring out a little bit of seasonal decor for a fresh update!
My Thoughts on Interior Design Trends:
Add trends in small doses…
If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you know that my decorating leans in a traditional direction. Sure, I enjoy adding a few trendy items here and there (the bow trend at Christmas, scalloped decor etc.), but for the most part I aim for a timeless look. Having said that, I do enjoy learning which trends will be popular each year!
Here are a few trends I’ve seen mentioned on social media that work for my style:
- New traditional (I like to think this is kind of how I already decorate).
- Vintage style – (Well, I think my blue vintage dresser qualifies for this trend).
- Equestrian/Western – (I think the Ralph Lauren vibes of this style is very classic).
- Moody Colors/Color Drenching – (I’d maybe try this in a bathroom where it’s not a huge commitment).
- Darker wood tones – (I have a few dark wood pieces in my dining room and living room…so I guess I’m trendy!).
But it’s always important to stay true to your style…
Like I said, I like to know what’s trending but that doesn’t mean I’m going to incorporate them all into my home. For instance, I never jumped on the gray trend. Sure, I may have a gray item or two…and I did use some grays when I updated my sons’ bathroom but the color never dominated my home.
Since my home has a slightly tropical vibe, plantation shutters are an item that makes sense for me. In fact, I consider plantation shutters to be classic…but not everyone does. On Instagram, I’ve seen content creators expressing how much they cannot stand plantation shutters and couldn’t wait to get rid of theirs. When I read those types of comments on social media, I sometimes second guess my decorating decisions. But then I remember that what works for some people, doesn’t work for everyone!

Love the new dresser in your foyer! The color and shape couldn’t be better. It’s so nice to have drawers in the entry way that you can actually use. The entry in our current home doesn’t have a place for that and I sure miss it.
Cracking up that plantation shutters are considered out!! I never even thought about them being tropical. We’ve had them in every house and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Thanks – yeah, I’m really happy with that dresser! And I’m not sure if plantation shutters are actually considered “out” but I have seen some strong opinions on them lately! I still love mine though!
I love this post! And, thank you for including my post in it! By the way, I absolutely love plantation shutters. When we were house hunting, we passed on a house that had too tiny a yard, but it had beautiful plantation shutters, and I still wish we had them!
Thanks Pam – and you’re welcome! Yeah, I consider plantation shutters to be classic!
I love the dresser and mirror combo – very classic. I never loved the grey trend either. Call me a rebel.
You rebel, you! Thanks Gina! This space has been evolving over the years…then again, is a home ever done?!!
