Christmas Decorating with Plaid (Simple & Cozy Ideas)
Happy weekend and welcome to the Saturday Spotlight where I share weekly inspiration! Since many of you have started decorating for the holiday season, I thought I’d start sharing some Christmas ideas for you. For the past few years, plaid has been very popular during the Christmas season. Actually, plaid always seems to be popular this time of year! So today, I’m sharing ideas for Christmas decorating with plaid!

Christmas Decorating with Plaid – Festive Table Ideas:
Classic Christmas table setting inspiration…
This Christmas, consider adding some plaid patterns to your table settings. One year, I used a navy blue plaid table runner as my starting point for my dining room table. To pull the look together I found coordinating ribbon to dress up my placemats a little. For more of this plaid table setting, see – Traditional Christmas Decor in the Dining Room.
Get creative with plaid accessories…
If you don’t have any plaid table-specific items, create a cozy look with a plaid blanket. One winter, I decorated my kitchen table with a navy and brown plaid blanket. In the past, I’ve also used plaid scarves as table runners. To see more photos of this winter table, read – Simple and Cozy Winter Tablescape.
Add red plaid napkins to your Christmas table…
When decorating your table for Christmas, there’s no need to spend a lot of money. Years ago, I simply covered my dining room table with a red checked tablecloth and added red plaid napkins to each place setting. Then I topped each setting with a simple pine cone and used the dishes I already owned. Super simple yet festive. To see the whole table setting (along with my dining room when it used to be red), read – Christmas Table with Checks and Plaid.
Set the tone with a plaid table runner and napkins…
On my Classic and Cozy Christmas House Tour, I brought touches of red into my kitchen with a plaid table runner and casual red and white plaid napkins.
Use dishes to add touches of plaid to your Christmas table…
If you don’t want to buy a whole set of holiday dishes, just buy salad plates and stack them on each place setting. For this table, I found some cute red and black plaid salad plates at Homegoods. That year, I used a lot of red and black in my Christmas decor so the plates were a great find…along with the ‘Jingle all the Way’ appetizer plates I placed on top. So see more of this table and that Christmas home tour, read – Christmas Decor House Tour.
Christmas Decorating with Plaid – Bows and Ribbons:
In my opinion, you can never have enough ribbons and bows at Christmas time.
Apparently, this year bows are super-trendy too. For last year’s Cozy Christmas Home Tour, I used plaid ribbon in a few places like on this basket above my stove. I also covered pillar candles in the same plaid ribbon and mixed in various plaid and checked ribbons throughout my home. On the tour, you’ll also see buffalo plaid pillows in my family room along with other touches of plaid decor.
Welcome guests with a wreath dressed in plaid on your front door…
If you want to set the tone for your plaid decorating inside your home, start with the front porch. For the past several years, I’ve been hanging this same artificial wreath but I just change the ribbon. Sometimes, I add some ornaments as well.
Add plaid ribbon to your Christmas tree…
To pull together the color scheme in your Christmas decorations, hang some plaid ribbon in your Christmas tree. Even though navy blue isn’t a traditional Christmas color, I made it work with the plaid ribbon. From there I was able to add red and blue ornaments, red bows and red berries for a classic Christmas vibe. One of these days, I should add some plaid ornaments as well. That year, I also coordinated my tablescape to match the tree. For more details of this room, see – Red and Blue Christmas Tree in the Dining Room.
Christmas Decorating with Plaid – Holiday Bedding:
Decorate with plaid fabric in the bedroom…
Each year, I like to add some holiday touches to my boys’ rooms. Usually, I don’t go too crazy with lights or Christmas trees but I do like to add some Christmas cheer with bedding…and plaid works well for boys! For more simple Christmas bedroom ideas, see – Decorate Your Kids’ Rooms for Christmas.
Christmas Decorating with Plaid – Wrapping Paper:
Easy and inexpensive way to add plaid to your home…
This Christmas, add some plaid touches to your home by wrapping all your gifts in coordinating plaid wrapping paper. Or, if you want to get creative with plaid wrapping paper, see how I use wrapping paper to hide clutter! During the holiday season, my TV cabinet tends to get a bit messy, so sometimes I cover the doors with wrapping paper. This way, the plaid looks decorative…yet I know the real purpose!
