Fall Family Room (Simple and Cozy Decorating Ideas)
Happy October to you! Now that fall is in full swing, I’d like to share some seasonal updates I’ve made to my family room. With just a few simple tweaks, I’ve created a cozy look that should work from now through Thanksgiving. So, come take a tour of my fall family room! Hopefully, some of my ideas will inspire you to decorate your family room this season!

Welcome to my fall family room:
A cozy gathering space with beautiful morning sunlight…

Fall Family Room (My Simple Decorating Ideas):
Choose a color palette…
Since my rug is navy blue with shades of brown, I continued those colors in my fall decorating. After all, working with what you have is the easiest (and cheapest) way to decorate. Once I decided on a color scheme, I focused on finding seasonal items like throw pillows and blankets that will work in the space.

Display seasonal accents…
With just a few fall-specific pieces like these golden stems and velvet pumpkins, it’s easy to update a mantel or shelf for the season. And don’t be afraid to tweak things. Just last week, I had some woven orbs on my mantel and then decided to replace them with the velvet pumpkins.

Create a fall vignette…
On my coffee table, I usually use a woven tray to display seasonal items (and to hold the TV remote). This year, I featured my brown wooden duck (a recent thrift store find) along with a candle and a dough bowl full of blue and brown items.

When decorating a coffee table for fall…or any season, I like to use short objects so they don’t block the TV.

To anchor my tray, I placed my burlap table runner underneath. The burlap adds another layer of coziness and texture to the room.

Add more cozy fall fabrics and textures…
In the fall, you can’t go wrong with plaid. Years ago, I bought this navy blue plaid pillow and love the way it gives a cozy Ralph Lauren vibe to the space. Actually, the plaid is actually a pillow cover that I switch out seasonally. If you love plaid, here are more plaid ideas for fall!

This fall, I purchased some brown and navy blue patterned pillows and paired them with my golden chenille pillows. Apparently, the patterned pillows are very popular this year. In fact, I bought the last 3 from my local store. At the moment, you can still buy them online.

Continue with similar colors in adjoining rooms…
Since we have an open concept layout between our family room and kitchen, I try to keep the rooms cohesive. Last week, I set my table with neutrals and touches of blue for fall. You can see more photos and details in my blog post – Neutral Fall Tablescape.

Hopefully, I’ve inspired you to decorate your fall family room!
If these ideas aren’t enough, here are more ways to decorate a family room for fall:
- Decorate with white pumpkins – or orange pumpkins if they work in your home.
- Include natural touches such as pine cones, wheat stalks or fall flowers.
- For a cozy (and easy)ambiance, add fairy lights or flameless candles to your fireplace.
- Clip some fall foliage from your yard to display on your mantel or shelf.
- Drape fluffy throw blankets over your furniture.
- Shop your home and find a new place for accessories.
- Fill a glass container with seasonal items like mini pine cones or hazelnuts.
