Decorating with Orchids (Simple Ideas for Your Home)
Happy weekend and welcome to the Saturday Spotlight! Since April 16th is “National Orchid Day”, I thought I’d gather up some orchid inspiration for you. Today, we’re going to focus on ideas for decorating with orchids. Although, at the end of this post, I have provided some links so you can learn more about taking care of orchids. Maybe I’ll learn along with you! (This blog post has been updated for 2024).

Decorating with Orchids at Home:
Follow interior designers for inspiration…
While visiting the Hampton Designer Showhouse a couple years ago, this stunning pink orchid caught my eye. Don’t you just love the way the vibrant pink stands out against that wallpaper? Yes, that wallpaper – gorgeous isn’t it?!!
To make a statement when decorating a room, consider adding an orchid plant…Not only do orchid plants add a splash of color, but their shape makes them stand out like a piece of art.
Decorate outdoor spaces with orchids…
On that same designer showhouse tour, I spotted another beautiful vignette featuring an orchid arrangement…Since this was an outdoor seating area, I’m sure the orchid plant did well with the bright light and humidity.
Create an orchid centerpiece…
On another showhouse tour, the interior designers (CWI Design), created a beautiful orchid centerpiece on the dining room table. With the gold decorative elements between the flower arrangements, this centerpiece adds a touch of elegance to the room.
Grow orchids in your bathroom…
Apparently, bathrooms are great environments for orchids due to the humidity. Somehow, I must have known this because I kept an orchid in my master bathroom for awhile. Don’t ask me if I still have this orchid, though. Thankfully, it did hang in there for a while…even under my care!
Joking aside, this orchid actually lived for quite awhile…much longer than the orchids I’ve had in my home office over the years! Since then, I’ve stuck mostly to artificial orchids but every now and then I’ll give a real one a try.
Dress up your orchid plant in a pretty container…
Recently, I bought this gorgeous navy blue scalloped planter. Since the size was perfect for an orchid plant, I bought a real one to try again. Hopefully, I can keep this one alive! If you’re interested, here is the exact flower pot I bought.
Look for orchid inspiration when you travel…
Whenever I go on vacation, I like to pick up decorating tips from hotels. At the Harbor View Hotel in Martha’s Vineyard, they decorated the hotel lounge area in a very classic and understated style. In this space, they used neutrals and yes, a couple well placed orchid plants. Don’t you agree the orchids just make the space? Though, I guess the beautiful architecture doesn’t hurt either!
If you love the look of this space, be sure to take my tour of the Harbor View Hotel. Afterwards, pop over to their website so you can see how they’ve redecorated since I’ve stayed there. Honestly, I can’t decide which look I prefer.
Of course, it you’re looking for orchid inspiration, Hawaii is the place to go! When we visited, we spotted orchids everywhere!
Decorate your fireplace mantel with orchids…
One year, when planning my spring mantel, I decided to decorate with classic white orchids. Perhaps, I was remembering how much I loved them at the hotels. Of course, I had to put my own spin on the look by including my blue and white porcelain.
Even though any color orchid would have worked on my mantel, I liked the way the white orchids let the blue pieces take the spotlight. And yes, those are faux orchids. If you can’t take care of orchids, substitute with some artificial ones…No one needs to know!
Use faux orchids in your vignettes…
Once again, I chose a white orchid when decorating my living room. Don’t you agree, it adds to the island vibe I have going on in there?
Recently, I replaced that accent table with my bar cart styled it in a tropical style– and of course I included a white orchid!
And when I styled my living room coffee table, I placed some artificial orchid stems on my stack of decorating books.
In my opinion, orchids can work with any style home. From modern to traditional, I’ve seen them used in every space. Obviously, they’re versatile – and so beautiful!

How lovely! Great tips and ideas and
D they are always so beautiful!
Thanks Nancy! They seem to go with everything!
When we were in Hawaii many years ago, they used orchids to garnish just about anything. My breakfast platter came with a lovely small orchid bloom on the plate. My iced tea came with an orchid bloom too. I saved them to put in a bowl of water in my room. They grew wild in the trees all along the road sides, SO beautiful!
You’re right! They do add them to everything in Hawaii! In fact, maybe I’ll add some photos from my trip there! Thanks for stopping by!
You are so right – there is something so elegantly simple about orchids…real or faux! I also have one in my bathroom, but is a faux that I picked up at Pottery Barn years ago. It just adds the perfect note to any room! But growing orchids…? Completely out of my wheel house !!
Thanks Kristine! Yes and some of the artificial orchids look so real…why deal with the stress of trying to keep the real orchids alive?! lol…
The pink orchid is stunning against the wallpaper, Shelley. Orchids are one of my favorite because they last a long time. And the white ones go with everything .
That wallpaper was in a designer showhouse and I’ve been thinking about it ever since that day! I agree – the orchid looks stunning!
My husband and I had two beautiful meals at Orchids when we were in Oahu a couple of years ago. Thank you for bringing back such happy memories, Shelley. Your orchids are beautiful, and I love how you have used them to decorate your home. What a beautiful way to bring nature in. Thank you for sharing and for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party Community. I’m featuring this post at the party this week. Hope to ‘see’ you there! Take care, stay well, and I wish you a wonderful week!
Thanks so much, April! Isn’t that restaurant wonderful? We dined there on our honeymoon in 1998 and then again with our kids in 2018. Such wonderful memories! Thanks so much for the lovely comment AND for featuring my post! Have a great week!
Orchids are so gorgeous, but I just never have been able to keep them long. I need to invest in a good faux arrangement, and then not stress over killing them! Love that blue/white mantel, Shelley. Thanks so much for always coming by to share your week with us at All About Home!
Orchids are so beautiful. This is a lovely post.
