Decorating with Hydrangeas from Summer to Fall:
How I use simple touches to transition to fall…
If you’re like me, you’re in no rush for the summer to end. Sure, I love fall but I can never get enough of the long, lazy days of summer! Since hydrangeas work for both summer and fall, they’re a great flower to decorate with this time of year. Here are some ways I’ve decorated with hydrangeas in my home…

Decorating with Hydrangeas from Summer to Fall:
Style your fireplace mantel with a large vase of hydrangeas…
This year, I’ve kept my fireplace mantel very simple. Instead of coming up with completely different looks each season, I have just made small tweaks. Basically, I start with the window pane mirror and the white vase and then change out the flowers and accessories.

Since my backyard hydrangeas are bursting with blooms, I cut a bunch of stems and filled the white vase for my end of summer – early fall look.

Shop the Look:
Make a focal point on your kitchen island with a tall vase of hydrangeas…
Yes, this is the same arrangement I used on my mantel. That day, I was moving the vase around to see where I liked it best!

Since I love adding some height to my island, the vase of hydrangeas really made a statement in the center. Such a great look for summer or fall.

Style your arrangement in a woven vase for early fall…
At the last minute, I remembered I bought this gorgeous woven vase earlier in the year. In my opinion, it’s the perfect vessel to hold a huge hydrangea bouquet!

Shop the Look:
Use a tray to display your hydrangeas…
Normally, I keep a round tray on the center of my island. One year, I decorated for early fall with trays, apples and of course my green hydrangeas from my yard.

Style your hydrangeas with blue and white accessories…
Last year, I used my blue and white vase for my early fall foyer arrangement…Once again, I liked how the height made a focal point on the table.

One year, I decorated for early fall in the kitchen by featuring hydrangeas while mixing in plenty of blue and white.

Decorate your window sill with hydrangeas…
Once again, I brought out some blue and white containers and used them in my kitchen window sill.

In the past, I’ve displayed hydrangeas in plain, glass vases…

And one year on my windowsill, I combined summer and fall with rattan wrapped glasses, hydrangeas and ceramic pears… To see even window sill decorating ideas, read – Easy Kitchen Window Sill Decorating Ideas for Every Season.

As we head into fall, add pumpkins to your hydrangea vignettes…
Sure, August is a little early for pumpkins. But as we head into September, I love to mix them into my early fall decor. For more ideas, read – Blue and White Fall Decorating Ideas.

Just like with trays, a round or long wooden board is great for displaying decorative items. I love mixing hydrangeas with mini white pumpkins for fall!

Create your own “artwork” from a hydrangea photo…
If you have the Waterlogue app or something similar, turn a photo into a watercolor and frame it for early fall! When creating a watercolor, I usually use a photo with minimal objects for more impact.

Make a wreath from dried hydrangeas…
As we head into fall, dry your hydrangeas and attach them to a grapevine wreath. When I made mine last year, I hung the wreath on the inside of the door. This way, we could see it everyday and it wouldn’t get damaged from being outside.

End of summer – early fall…
A couple weeks ago, I took this photo of my pink hydrangeas with the full moon in the background. With the sun setting earlier these days, this photo is giving end of summer vibes. Oh summer…I’m going to miss you!

Beautiful! I love hydrangeas and you have given me so many great ideas to use them this Fall.
Have a lovely weekend.
Thanks Elizabeth! Enjoy your weekend!
Hydrangeas truly are a wonderful transitional element! I love the wreath that you created and am inspired to create something similar Shelley. Thank you for all these incredible ideas!
Thanks so much, Laura! Yeah, I’m not very “crafty” but that wreath was super easy for fall!
Oh my goodness Shelley, you have so many fabulous ideas for decorating with hydrangeas. I want to copy them all! I especially love your mantel, and your hydrangea wreath! So happy to be in this mini hop with you! Hugs!
Thanks Michelle! I have so many hydrangea bushes in my yard – so I might as well use them! Great to hop with you too!
It’s all just gorgeous! I love the simplicity of simple seasonal tweaks. I think many of us that starting blogging several years ago have really stopped going overboard with tons of store bought decorative items and I love it so much!
All of your hydrangeas look beautiful, but the woven vase as a vessel is a stunner! I miss my hydrangea bushes at the yellow brick home this time of year when the blooms are also in transition from summer to fall.
As always I love your classic and timeless decorating! Thank you so much for joining the hop!
Thanks Amber! Yes, you’re right about skipping the tons of store bought items and getting creative in other ways. Even though I like to share my decor, I don’t usually buy things just for the sake of displaying them on the blog. Thanks again for your kind comment and for hosting us all!
Hi, this is the first year I’ve had decent Hydrangea blossoms and I’m so afraid to cut them for fear of losing the plants. Yours are so gorgeous. Here in Chicagoland we’ve had severe or extreme drought for several years and this year we were deluged with repeated rains..so they are so the plants are so happy. Hoping to have more blossoms next year if we get rain! Sandi
Thanks Sandra! Our weather has been all over the place as well! I hope your flowers keep blooming! Thanks for stopping by!
I can’t choose a favorite look. The way you styled the hydrangeas is fantastic Shelley. I love simplicity too and pairing things back. I remember back in the early 2000s when my house looked like Hobby Lobby threw up in it. Yikes! LOL. Love your style and elegance.
Thanks Cindy! Yes I’ve simplified my decor a lot in recent years as well!
