Navy Dining Room – ORC Week 2 (Progress, Painting and Shopping)

The first week of the One Room Challenge (aka ORC) started out with some major progress in my dining room…

Wow, what a difference paint makes!  Over the past few months, I had tested several colors.  As soon as I tried Naval from Sherwin Williams, I knew it was the right one.

As the paint went on the walls, I knew I made the right decision to go bold with color.  Usually, I cringe as soon as we start painting and I start second guessing my color choice.  Well, not this time.  The navy blue just feels right in there.

Since I had cleared out the china cabinet so the painter could move it, I took the time to clean it from top to bottom before I put everything back in.  Actually, I only put the dishes back in the drawers and cabinets.  I plan to style the top glass part later.  (So for now, I have a messy pile of stuff in my living room.)

Anyway, I did play around with my ledge shelves a bit.  I must say, I’m loving the blue and white against the navy walls.

Also, I tested out some curtain panels I bought at Homegoods awhile back.  Though, I’m not sure if I will hang these or go with all white.

I shopped for some rugs but didn’t commit to any because I started second guessing my decision to even change the rug.

Sometimes, I think I might just go for a seagrass and be done with it…

Here is my existing rug…

As you can see, my rug does have some navy in it.  Now that the walls are navy, the navy in the rug stands out a little more.  So, I am still thinking about that.

Though, I did order a rug sample from Serena and Lily…

Even though I absolutely love the pattern, I am not going to order the rug because the blue doesn’t go well with my navy walls and it’s also a cotton rug.  Of course, I didn’t notice that when I ordered the sample because it was listed as a dhurrie.  Originally, I was thinking it was wool or maybe some kind of synthetic but I don’t know if cotton is the way to go in there.  Isn’t it pretty, though?

I also found these adorable chairs at Homegoods…

They had four in the store and they were only $99 each!  I thought about buying all four and then painting them white.  Since, I have never painted cane before, I got nervous and quickly put up a story on Instagram hoping to get some advice.  Several of you told me to go ahead and paint the cane and suggested I use spray paint.  Several of you told me to snatch the chairs up right away before someone else does.  Of course, I got all hesitant and couldn’t make a decision…so I didn’t buy them.  My original thoughts were to just change the head chairs and recover the side chairs so I have to really think about that.  I know…you snooze, you lose, right?  Ugh…

So, that’s the progress on my navy dining room so far!

  1. Love the wall color, this is going to be amazing. I really like the idea of a seagrass rug, so classic.

  2. My son painted a room a color very much like this (maybe the same since it’s by BM paint too). Seems like a seagrass rug will blend in with the color of the wood floor so I guess you have to decide if you want it to be subtle or a contrast. It’s going to be a beautiful room when you are done!

  3. Shelley that navy is SOOOOOOO beautiful with your white trim! Don't you love the wood of your furniture with it? I found when I painted my master bedroom navy it complimented the wood dressers so well and I got over the itch to paint them that I was having. I love your plans for updating this space! I have seagrass in my dining room and living room, it's indestructible (I had another one for many years before these) and I just got a new jute rug for our family room that I love from RugsUSA….their prices are so good!
