January Decorating Inspiration:

Start the new year with a clean slate…

Once you’ve packed away all the Christmas decorations, it’s nice to let your home breathe a little.  This time of year, I like to give my home a good cleaning before I bring out any seasonal items.  In my opinion, the kitchen is a great place to start!

So far, I reorganized some cabinets, threw away some long-expired pantry items and scrubbed every kitchen surface I could.  On sunny days like this, I feel rewarded by the sun shining into my freshly cleaned kitchen!

To keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed, start with an easy project…

  • Reorganize the cabinet under your kitchen sink.
  • Throw away any old spices…(we all have them!).
  • Clean out one drawer…even just wiping the inside of your silverware drawer helps.
  • Replace any stinky sponges.
  • Don’t go to bed until your sink is clean and/or dishwasher is loaded.

I’ve been doing the last one on the list for years and it makes such a difference in my life.  Of course, there are days when I find remnants from my husband’s late night snacks…ugh.  Oh well, at least most of the time it’s clean!

*Basically, if you clean or organize just one space, you’ll feel accomplished…and you’ll want to do more…and then you’ll want to decorate again.  At least that’s how I feel!  Try it!

Create a winter vignette…

Each season, I decorate my kitchen island with a simple vignette.  Usually, I use a round wooden tray to gather my items.  This month, I’m displaying a white candle in a glass hurricane, a white ceramic house left over from Christmas, my white ceramic bird, a bit of faux greenery and a pine cone.

Last January, I used the same tray when I shared my cozy winter home ideas.  Once again, I kept a neutral color scheme…

During the winter months, a neutral color palette always works in my home.  Overall, it gives me a nice break between the reds of Christmas and then Valentine’s Day.  Though, if you are ready to start decorating for Valentine’s Day, here are some Valentine tablescapes and decorating ideas.

More accessories for the winter months…

  • Mercury glass items
  • White candles
  • White flowers or even baby’s breath
  • White branches in a tall vase
  • Natural elements and items with lots of texture

Bring out the cozy throw pillows and blankets…

Whether you’re reading a book by the fireplace or just watching TV, make your space extra cozy with plush pillows and throw blankets.  Chair and ottoman with plush blankets and pillows - January decorating inspiration

Right now, my exact white pillow is still available if you’re interested…and here’s a similar white throw blanket and this similar cableknit throw comes in a few colors.

Add a basket of pine cones and be done with your January decorating…

To keep your January decorating super-simple, just fill a basket with pine cones.  If you want to add a little sparkle, throw in some battery operated twinkle lights.  Just a simple touch like that can create ambiance during the cold winter months.

Most of the year, I keep books stacked on my living room coffee table.  Then I just change out the seasonal items like the basket of pine cones.  For instance, in the summer I’ll fill the basket with shells.  Ahh summer…it seems so far away with all this cold, winter weather we’re experiencing.

Super-Easy January “craft”:

Creative tissue dispenser idea…

Seriously, this is so easy, I shouldn’t even call this a craft!  Actually, it’s more of a “hack”.  Recently, I’ve been seeing a bunch of Instagram influencers using different home decor items as tissue boxes. Of course, I had to jump on the trend and create my own tissue box…from a galvanized milk can. Since we’re in the midst of cold and flu season, this idea will make sure you have plenty of tissues on hand!

To create this tissue dispenser, I just filled the bottom of a milk can with crumpled paper and stuffed a box load of tissues inside.  Yes, embarrassingly easy!  If you want to see a quick video of my tissue box “in action” view my Instagram reel.

January Decorating Inspiration – Shopping Finds:

Freshen up your home for the new year with some of these items…

On a recent Target trip, I spotted a bunch of white canisters and wooden items on their Hearth and Hand display. If you’re looking for decorating inspiration, store displays can help you visualize items for your home.

If you’re in the market for a swivel chair this winter, here is a great find!  In fact, my niece has four of these in her living room and I tested them out on Christmas day…very cozy and comfortable!

  1. Shelley – I love the little vignette on your kitchen island, and that chair is just so inviting ! All of your ideas are great – I pinned away! I think Winter deserves decorating that celebrates it-and you did it beautifully. I really wish there wasn’t such a rush toward Valentines Day/St Patrick’s Day/Easter (Spring) the minute the Christmas tree comes down. I love winter (not a popular outlook) and really enjoy decorating for it.

    1. Thanks so much for the kind words and for pinning, Kristine! I definitely like to take a little break before we jump into the next holiday. And we have a family of skiers…so winter is popular in my house! Enjoy your weekend!
