Halloween Decorating Ideas – Indoors and Outdoors

Happy Weekend and welcome to the Saturday Spotlight!  Wow, October is flying by and before long it will be Halloween! Of course, I’ll end up waiting until the last minute to buy Halloween candy so I usually get stuck with all the reject candy.  Hopefully, the trick or treaters won’t get mad and egg our house or something…lol! Anyway, with Halloween approaching, I thought I’d try to inspire you with some Halloween decorating ideas for indoors and out!  (Updated for 2023).

Halloween Decorating Ideas for Inside and Outside:

Simple ideas for the front porch and beyond…

In our house, we never go too crazy with the Halloween decor but I have come up with a few cute Halloween ideas over the years…

Skull and Pumpkins on porch - almost Halloween decor

Well… maybe that photo isn’t in the “cute” Halloween category, but some of my other ideas in that blog post would qualify!  Be sure to check out all those fun ideas!

Not so simple ideas for Halloween…

In the weeks leading up to Halloween, the residents of Lambertville, New Jersey go all out with their Halloween decorations.

Yes, this was just one of the many porches decorated for Halloween.  When we visited last week, we were blown away by the creativity.  If you’re in the area during the month of October, definitely stop by North Union Street for tons of Halloween inspiration!

Halloween Decorating Ideas – Pumpkin Carving:

Pumpkin carving traditions with the family…

Like many of you, we carve a bunch of pumpkins a few days before Halloween.  This year, my younger son is a senior in high school.  Obviously, pumpkin carving day will be extra special…if not for him, definitely for me!  I’m cherishing every moment I have with him before he heads off to college next year!

Which reminds me…Do you ever bake your pumpkin seeds?  Every year during pumpkin carving day, the boys and I always bake a batch.  And every year we end up throwing most of them out because we remember we actually don’t like them!  Fun times…but I’m sure I’ll miss those little traditions someday!

Alternatives to Pumpkin Carving:

Turn your pumpkin into a popular character…

Ok, now I’m getting all sentimental about my boys getting older!  Years ago, one of them had a family school assignment to create a pumpkin from a favorite book character…

Of course, it was no surprise we ended up designing a Spongebob pumpkin!  Boys…

So, if you want to try something different, try creating a pumpkin based on a book or TV character.  Plus, you could carve the pumpkin or you could paint or draw on one.  The possibilities are endless!

Paint a pumpkin with buffalo checks…

If you’d rather decorate your pumpkin in a more sophisticated look, try painting some buffalo checks…

Black and White Buffalo Check Pumpkins

If you’re interested in trying this, I shared my simple tutorial on the blog so be sure to check it out.  For my project, I used white pumpkins but you could also use orange…or just paint them orange and black.  That way, your pumpkins would have more of a Halloween vibe!

Create a jack-o-lantern with markers…

For an even easier Halloween pumpkin “craft”, simply draw a face on mini pumpkins like I did for my Halloween table setting…

Of course, I had to include white pumpkins in this round up of Halloween decorating ideas… They’re my favorites and just too cute to forget!

Halloween Shopping (Ideas for Indoors and Out):

Simple decorations to greet your guests or trick or treaters…

Whether you’re decorating inside or outside this Halloween, you can’t go wrong with witch hats!

To use them in your decor, hang them on your porch or in your foyer…or dress up and scare the trick or treaters!

Or you could really scare those trick or treaters with a creepy skeleton or two..

And for even more Halloween decorating ideas for indoors or outdoors, here are some finds from around the internet:

Hopefully, some of these Halloween decorating ideas will inspire you.  As a reminder, October 26th is National Pumpkin Day and of course, October 31st is Halloween!  It’s almost here!
