Spring Nesting – Simple Ideas for Outdoor Spaces
Hello friends! Is your weather starting to feel like spring? For the most part, our weather in New Jersey has been all over the place with too many rainy days mixed in! Hopefully, we’ll be getting more sun this week so we can start enjoying our outdoor living areas. So far, I’ve managed to do a little spring nesting to make our patio more inviting for our family. Now, if the day finally comes where we can actually have guests over again…we’ll be ready!
Today, I’m hoping to inspire you with some simple ideas for outdoor spaces.

Essential Ideas for Outdoor Spaces – Flowers:
If you only do one thing to decorate your outdoor spaces for spring, then you have to plant some flowers! In my opinion, flowers make a yard feel so cheerful and welcoming.
Last year, we put in a bunch of new landscaping when we installed our patio and pool. It’s been so exciting to see everything start to bloom this spring. In the past, I mostly did container gardening on our deck because the deer would eat everything on the ground. Now that we have a fenced in area around the pool, the deer can’t reach our flowers. Thankfully, it’s opened up a whole new world of flower gardening for us!
Dining Alfresco on the Patio:
One of my favorite ways to decorate outdoors is to set the patio table. As long as the weather is cooperating, we make every effort to eat as many meals as possible on the patio. As you can see, I set my most recent table with flowers straight from my yard. Though, the orchid in the center is faux. Basically, I needed a little height to disguise the pole…but I do love decorating with them. If you’re a fan of orchids, be sure to check out my orchid decorating ideas!
To keep each setting simple, I just placed one flower on each napkin. I think it’s a great way to add some color while coordinating with the flowers in the center of the table.
You can’t go wrong with a blue and white background…especially for spring and summer.
Make Outdoor Areas an Extension of Your Indoor Areas:
If you read my blog, you know that I frequently decorate with blue and white so it only made sense to continue those colors outside.
Throughout my home, many of my backgrounds are neutral so the pops of colors can stand out…just like on the patio.
It’s also fun to bring a few indoor accessories outside.
A Place to Get Cozy:
While nesting outdoors, it’s nice to have a cozy place to hang out. Our family has loved gathering around our fire pit in the evenings. Last summer, the neighborhood kids were back here almost every night. Needless to say, we went through a ton of marshmallows!
Even if you don’t have a firepit, you can always set up a cluster of chairs for a comfy space to hang out. One of these days, I plan to update my plastic Adirondack chairs with some more substantial ones, but these work fine for now. We had our fire pit custom made but if you are looking for something similar, this fire pit has the same style.
Get creative and surround the spot with candles or outdoor lights for some ambiance in the evening. Throw some pillows and blankets on the chairs, grab a bottle of wine and you’ll be set for the night.

But if you do have a firepit, you must always keep s’mores ingredients on hand! It’s practically a requirement!
Hopefully, I’ve inspired you to decorate your outdoor areas as living spaces.
While we are all home, it’s nice to have additional areas where we can hang out!

Love your pool area, Shelley. And it just fits to decorate with blue and white with the water right in the center of everything. Love the pops of pink with it all, too. So pretty! And yes…if we can just get some nice weather to stay!
Thanks, Lora! Yes, the water definitely adds to my blue and white theme…so convenient! Fingers crossed for some nicer weather!

Thanks Jemma! For now, I am happy to enjoy our patio with the family…but I am definitely looking forward to entertaining friends someday!
You have such a great outdoor space to enjoy. I know you especially appreciate having it while sheltering in place.
Thanks Paula! Yes, it’s definitely a life saver to have an extra area to hang out while we are home. Though, my boys are getting restless not being able to see their friends…and so am I! Stay well, friend!
Shelley I always enjoy visiting your backyard patio! It’s such a sanctuary! I loved your touches of blue and white on your table and your darling s’mores set up! I wish I could hop right on over!
Thanks Kelly! During these crazy times, I really am thankful to have an extra space to hang out. How fun it would be if you could swing by! Stay well, friend!
That looks lovely and so inviting! We began putting out some of our patio furniture but the weather has not been cooperative enough for us to actually use it yet. Pinned.
Joanne, thanks for your sweet comment -and for pinning! Hopefully, the weather will start warming up so we can all use our outdoor spaces!
Hi Shelley,
Your backyard is beautiful, love your stone patio.
Your fire pit is a great family spot to make wonderful memories!
Cindy
Thanks so much, Cindy! I think that fire pit will get a lot of use these next few months! Stay well!
Summer and s’mores! Go hand in hand!
And it looks like you could definitely have some friends over with space for social distancing!
Yes, and I will have to stock up on those ingredients! I’m not quite ready to have friends over yet but maybe I’ll get brave and spread everyone out one of these days. Thanks for swinging by and commenting!
My pleasure!
Shelley,
You have a beautiful patio area. The fire pit does look cozy, and now I want a some s’mores! What a wonderful place for your children and their friends to hang out. Growing up, our backyard was the neighborhood hang out place. The yard always had something going on… badminton, kick-the-can, softball.
Happy spring,
Judith
Thank you, Judith! That’s great that your backyard was the neighborhood hang-out growing up. I love when my boys have friends over and our yard is filled with kids having fun. I cannot wait to get back to those days! Stay well, friend!
Everything is just gorgeous, what a great place to relax and unwind from the day! I brought out all our outdoor cushions from last year but that is about it so far.
I am in Florida so we have had warm weather, but I love your outdoor space. I want to have some s’mores.
Have a great week,
Kippi
Your outdoor spaces are beautiful! I think my favorite is the fire pit. I would love to be sitting by the fire with s’mores right now! Only our weather has returned to fall-like with the drop in temps and misting rain.
So pretty! Blue is my favorite color, so love this!
