Indoor and Outdoor Fern Decorating Ideas:

Add a classic look to a space with a fern plant…

A few years ago, I heard that ferns can help clean indoor air.  To give it a try, I bought a fern for my foyer.  Besides the healthy aspect, it was nice to be greeted by a live plant when we walked in the front door.

Somehow, I managed to keep the plant alive for awhile.  Plus, I loved the way it added color to the space.

Even though we get plenty of light in my entryway, this spot wasn’t ideal for my fern.  Eventually, I moved it to my bathroom where it’s doing well.  (Actually, it’s shocking that I’ve kept it alive for several years).  Though, I think the high humidity in the bathroom seems to help.

Group your fern plants with other greenery and accessories for a layered look…

Even though this photo is a store display (from my Connecticut shopping trip), you can see how mixing a fern gives some visual interest.  In my opinion, ferns have a timeless appeal and look great in traditional as well as casual homes.

Style your fern plant in a blue and white planter…

On a designer showhouse tour, I spotted this cute fern and planter on a windowsill.  I love the way it pulled the colors from the room and added some life to the space.  (Although, I think this was a faux fern.)  Either way, if you’d like to tour more of this beautiful room, see – Diane Durocher Interiors – Mansion in May 2023.

Display your ferns in a rustic container…

Isn’t this a gorgeous way to display ferns?  This window display happens to be from the same designer from above but from a different showhouse.  To see more of this stunning room in her portfolio, see – Diane Durocher Interiors – Mansion in May 2025.

Welcome spring with an artificial fern and hydrangeas centerpiece…

Recently, Pottery Barn started selling this faux hydrangea and fern centerpiece.  If you’re thinking ahead to spring and summer, this would make a beautiful focal point for the center of a dining table…or even a coffee table.

Create your own version of a fern and hydrangea centerpiece…

If you want to go with a DIY option, I whipped up a Pottery Barn look-a-like for a fraction of the price.  To make my centerpiece, I layered faux fern stems, some artificial hydrangea flowers, some other green leaves and glass hurricanes with candles. When I created my centerpiece, I didn’t have any flower foam blocks.  So, it ended up being little flatter than the inspiration piece.

If I end up buying a foam block, I might try again to make my centerpiece look my like the Pottery Barn one.  If you’re skilled at arranging flowers, this would be an easy DIY project.

Bring ferns into your home with artwork…

For a colorful focal point, hang a series of fern framed art over a sofa…like Nora Murphy did her beautiful store.

Add ferns to your outdoor spaces…

Apparently, ferns grow well in shade and partial sunlight.  From what I’ve read, they’re also low maintenance…which would be great for someone with a black thumb like me!  On a summer garden tour, I spotted these pretty ferns surrounded a stone bench.  I love the fullness and English garden vibe they add to the space.

Other fern decorating ideas for outdoor spaces:

  • For a classic southern vibe, hang Boston fern plants on your front porch.
  • Dress up your entrance with potted ferns on either side of your front door.
  • Display ferns in window boxes or container gardens on your deck.

Fern Inspired Shopping Finds:

Pretty items to add fern decor to your home…

With embroidery being so popular again, this botanical pillow would make a beautiful addition to any sofa.

To welcome guests this spring or summer, this rose and fern wreath would look pretty on a front door.

If you’re like me and don’t have a green thumb, this woven basket with ferns is a great (and inexpensive) way to add some ferns to your home.

If you want to add color and a charming focal point to a room, hang a set of prints with a botanical fern theme.
