Simple Garage Storage Ideas (for Sports Shoes)
Recently, I kicked off one of my cleaning frenzies by tearing into the Back Hall Closet. But the fun didn’t stop there. Soon, I discovered that part of my problem was having too many shoes in that closet. With a husband and two boys, I really couldn’t have those stinky sports shoes taking up space. And who wants them smelling up the inside of the house anyway? So, rather than storing the shoes inside the house, I came up with some simple garage storage ideas instead.
Simple Garage Storage Ideas (for Sports Shoes):
So while shopping at Lowe’s, I picked up one of those metal shelves. These things are great for simple garage storage and are so easy to assembly!
To make things easy for the boys to remove their shoes before entering the house, I placed the shelf right next to the back stairs. Honestly, I don’t mind if they keep their everyday shoes or sneakers in the laundry/mud room but those golf and football spikes make me crazy! Did you ever notice how much caked on mud a pair of spikes can hold?
Not only will this keep my house smelling fresher but it will keep dirt from being dragged inside. (Speaking of dirt, I think I have to freshen up the paint on the door and stair risers!)
Now the shoe dirt can just fall to the garage floor instead of being dragged through my house. Plus, the stink can stay in the garage!
Shelves for Additional Items:
Since I had a few extra baskets left over from my hall closet, I decided to use them for various storage…a spare umbrella, Rosie’s leashes and brushes…
Now I have a neat place to rest the bike helmets as well.
On the next shelf down, I lined up the roller blades near a whole box of knee and elbow guards (that my boys refuse to wear). Why not fill up the shelf with all kinds of sports gear?
Now that I’m getting my garage storage in order, I guess I can move on to the next project! By the looks of things, I will be buying some more white paint for the door and stairs!
*Update – Since I loved this storage shelf so much, I bought another one for another area of my garage!

I love your open shelving you found. I agree that those shoes need to be stored outside. I have a house full of boys so I know from experience how much dirt can come into a house from dirty shoes. I like the fact that the shelving is open too.
oh it looks so neat now. I need one of those. Keep those manly smells outside I always say. Wait to they get older, it's worse ..but we love our boys don't we? 🙂
