Artichoke Candle Holder (Easy DIY Decorating Idea)

Artichokes are a classic in home decor and never seem to go out of style.  With their sculptural shape and moody green color, they’re a perfect accessory for tablescapes and vignettes.  This week, I was inspired to turn a fresh artichoke into a candle holder to display in my home.  (As you may have noticed, I only attempt the super easy DIY projects!)  Today, I’ll show you how I made my artichoke candle holder in just a few minutes!

Artichoke Candle Holder:

What you’ll need for this easy project…

  • Fresh artichoke
  • Pillar candle or tealight
  • Sharp knife

Steps to Make an Artichoke Candle Holder:

1.  Choose a large artichoke…

Larger artichokes are easier to work with and will give you more options with candle sizes.

2.  Trim the Stem…

Cut the stem flush so the artichoke is able to stand upright without falling over.  After all, you don’t want it to roll over with a candle in it!

3.  Peel back the outer leaves (aka the bracts)…

Gently pull and spread the leaves outward.  While you’re doing this, be careful because the tips of the bracts are prickly.

4.  Cut the center out…

Since the middle is hard to remove, you’ll need a knife for this part.

5.  Clear the center…

Pull out the small inner leaves until you create a flat opening in the middle.  This is where the candle will sit.

6.  Set your candle inside…

You could use a small pillar candle or a tealight candle.  For mine, I placed a tealight candle in a small glass candleholder.

The glass keeps the flame away from the artichoke leaves.  Either way, you don’t want to leave the lit candle unattended.  To be even safer, use a flameless candle.

7.  Style your new candle holder…

You could group three down the center of a table or add your artichoke candle holder to a simple vignette like I did.

Some additional tips…

  • Make your candle holder the same day you plan on using it.  (Artichokes dry out fast at room temperature).
  • When styling, mix in other natural items for an organic feel.
  • Get a manicure before showing your hands up close in photos- (haha!)
