If you are like me, you run back and forth to the grocery store a dozen times before hosting a holiday dinner. Just when you think you are set with all of the ingredients, you realize you are out of brown sugar! Either that or you realize the brown sugar that you do have, has turned into a rock.
What can you use as a substitute for brown sugar?
Instead of using a substitute for brown sugar, why not make your own?
Seriously, can you really make brown sugar?
Well, apparently I am the only one in my family who knows about this helpful kitchen tip.
I have “made my own” brown sugar several times before and just the other day had to do it again. When I mentioned this “creation” in front of relatives recently, everyone looked at me like I had two heads.
Yes, you can make your own brown sugar but you must have these two ingredients:
- White sugar
Just mix one cup of white sugar and one tablespoon of molasses with a fork until blended. Yes, that’s all you have to do!
Apparently, light molasses or sulfured/unsulphured molasses are the ones to use for cooking. I only had Blackstrap molasses in my pantry, so I used that. Because Blackstrap has a stronger taste, it isn’t really recommended for baking. Well, don’t call the molasses police on me because we we were thrilled with the peanut butter cookies we made. Also, Blackstrap has higher mineral content than the others so I like to think that my cookies were healthy! Ha! I will have to try the recipe again with the other molasses and then regular brown sugar to compare the taste.
Like I said, if you want to save yourself a trip to the store, you might want to try this brown sugar substitution!
Of course in my house, it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving morning without sending my husband on a last minute trip to the store for something! It has become tradition that I will inevitably forget one ingredient or decide we need an extra gallon of milk or something. My husband expects this every year and dare I say, he looks forward to it!
Like every year, I write up a little sticky note listing the ingredients so he can roam around the store with all the other husbands doing the same thing. He acts annoyed when I send him out but I know he secretly enjoys his Thanksgiving grocery store ritual! I will have to think about what I need to send him out for this year. Either way, I think I am set with the brown sugar!
