Office Progress – Walls and Floors

We are making some progress in my office renovation….

The hardwood floor and crown molding is installed

 and the room is painted!

I mentioned this room was once an office when we first moved in.  It was never fully decorated.  I had a desk and bookcase from Bombay Company and the walls were still builder white.  At that time, it was a purely functional place to keep my things.  Then it became a playroom, turned dog-crate room.  But as you can see, it is now on its way back to becoming my office!

Here is how the room looked

after we cleared out most of the playroom furniture

in preparation for my darling doggie’s arrival!

I have no idea why I cannot find a picture of the room with furniture.

Maybe I never took any pictures of it.

What’s wrong with me?

This was all the furniture left when we started using the room for the dog.  Anyway, as you can see, it was a colorful room.  The walls were painted Philadelphia Cream by Benjamin Moore.  And yes, I had white carpeting… (obviously, not the best choice for a kids’ playroom – or a dog!)

The kids dented up the walls with their toys but the carpet wasn’t in terrible shape.

Then the puppy arrived and took over the room…

Oh, I miss that puppy fluffiness!

If you want a cute puppy fix – watch this video of Rosie’s first day with us.

You might have noticed she squatted on the rug

right at the end.  Yeah, we needed to replace that carpet!

But for more reasons than one…

Last summer she got a little rambunctious!

Although it was a mess,

I thanked her for forcing us to change that carpeting!

So, this is how the room looks right now.

I chose hickory for the floors

because of the hardness and the variation in color.

I figured with kids and a dog, the floors might get a little beaten up.

This way the dents and scratches won’t show as much…hopefully!

I wanted to keep the walls light.

Originally I wanted a gray tone but ended up with

Bone White by Benjamin Moore.

I love how the floors look with the wall color.

Here is a close up of the floor.

It’s from the Character Collection of Somerset Floors.

The color is Hickory Saddle.

Now I am in the process of choosing furniture.

No final decisions yet but I am getting there!

Are you working on any rooms now?

  3. I was hoping you'd mention the new wall color because I love it, and I was pleased to find I already have it in my craft room! I'm thinking about using it in the rest of my house, so am happy for the reinforcement. (I'm always happy to have a pat on the back for doing something right! LOL!) I love your floors, too, which is another decision I'll be making soon. How about if I just let you do all the work and I'll just copy you, since you clearly have great taste!! 8. Hi Shelley. We're in the process of installing new flooring and are seriously considering Somerset's Hickory Saddle. I came across your blog and the pictures of your floor look great. How are the floors holding up after 3 years of use? Are you still happy with your choice? Thank you!

    1. Yes! I am still very happy with my floors. No fading or scratches. So much better than the builder grade Bruce hardwood floors we used to have in our dining room and living room. Just last year, we installed finished on-site Red Oak floors in the rest of our downstairs but left my office with the Somerset floors since they were new. My husband wanted to go with what he considered "real hardwood" because he was concerned about the prefinished floors in the kitchen. Well, the "real hardwood" floors have already scratched and have quite a few dings in them while my office still looks new! So yes, I recommend the Somerset floors! My neighbor also has prefinished hickory in her house but a different brand. (I don't remember which), and she loves them. Her floors still look beautiful as well so it might be the hardness of the hickory that makes them hold up so well. Good luck making your decision. Hope that helped!

  9. Hello, I am not sure if you still check your email or blog, but I had a question about the somerset floors. First, thanks so much for posting, as your pic is the only one I have found of the flooring in someone’s actual house. I had 2 questions:1. How are the floors holding up? I noticed you put them in in 2013. Are they still doing well? I intend to put them in my open concept, kitchen, living room, dining room with 2 young kids and a dog. Do you think (based on what you have experienced) that they will hold up well?2. I know that images on the computer sometimes are not what they are in real life. I have seen small samples of the flooring, and it looks less dark and slightly more red than the images you posted. In 2 of your images it is dark and in the 3rd it is much lighter. I am hoping it is more on the lighter side. If you remember your post, can you tell me which pics it is closer in color too and if it does have a tinge of red in it?Thanks so much, and again, thanks for taking the time to post. It really helps a lot of people trying to make a decision about what to buy.
