Before I begin with my “best ever” chili recipe, I want to thank Rachelle from My Hubbard Home for hosting this wonderful blog hop. Rachelle has a beautiful blog and today she’s sharing an amazing autumn apple crisp recipe. When you’re done here, please be sure to swing by and say hello!

As I mentioned, my contribution today is our chili recipe…
Years ago, my sister in-law gifted a book of family recipes to me for Christmas. This chili recipe was included in the book and it’s the only chili recipe I’ve made for my family. You know how it is when a family gets used to traditions… Anyway, not only is this recipe delicious, but it’s super easy!
Best Ever Chili Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs. ground beef (I prefer grass fed)
- 1 large onion
- 2 cans (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 cup water
- 2 cans (16 oz) red kidney beans
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 Tbsp flour
- 4 Tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 bay leaf
Directions:
Brown 2 lbs of ground beef and drain fat.
Sprinkle with:
- 4 Tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
Mix well.
Add the following to beef mixture:
- 1 large onion (chopped)
- 2 cans tomato sauce
- 1 cup water
- 1 bay leaf
Cover and simmer for 1 hour.
Remove the bay leaf.
In a large bowl, stir together:
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 Tbsp flour
Then stir in 2 cans of red kidney beans, (un-drained).
Add to meat mixture and stir.
Cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
Enjoy a steaming bowl of chili on the next autumn evening!
Here are some extras to include on the side (or sprinkle on top of the chili)
- Grated cheddar cheese
- Avocado slices
- Cilantro
- Cherry tomatoes
- Chopped onions
- Chopped jalapeno peppers
If you like your chili with a side of cornbread, you must try another of our family recipes – Aunt Lillian’s Famous Cornbread.
Enjoy!

Yum! We just made chili last Wednesday and today I’m making white chicken chili (Wednesdays are busy and crock pot meals are on duty!). Pinned.
Thanks, Joanne! I need to pull out my crock pot more! Thanks for stopping by!
Shelly, always love a thick rich chili – and I would never say no to corn bread 😉
Easy to prepare and yummy meals like this chili are a must for busy fall days.
Thanks for a new recipe and for joining with me on the hop!
Hugs,
Rachelle
Thanks Rachelle! Even though we’re home more, I don’t need to spend all day in the kitchen – easy recipes are the way to go for us. Thanks again for hosting this awesome blog hop!
I can’t wait until it’s cool enough to make chili, the best food for fall nights!! Your tried and true recipe sounds perfect Shelley, if it’s the Best Ever, I need to try it!! Sorry for the mix up with my link…
Jenna
Thanks Jenna! I’m glad the link is working now. Yes, chili is one of our favorite comfort foods for fall. I hope you like our simple recipe. It was easy for me to come up with a title for my post since my sister in law called the recipe – Best Chili Ever right in the book!
This sounds fabulous Shelley! Yes I know how those traditions go – I tried to make a different meat loaf once and my kids freaked out! 😉 I can’t wait to try your family favorite! 🙂
It’s so fun hopping with you – already can’t wait for next time!
Thanks so much, Barbara! It’s funny how our families expect food to taste a certain way! Great hopping with you too!
I am looking forward to making my first batch of chili for fall. I’ve got your recipe pinned so that when it’s chili making time, I’ll have it handy.
Thanks Paula! We already made it the other night…first cool evening and I was ready! I hope you like it!
Family recipes are such a treasure. That’s where so many of the recipes that I share on the blog come from. Your chili looks so delicious severed over rice. Yum! Pinning!
Thanks Michelle! You just reminded me that I showed the rice but never mentioned it as a side. Ooops. Yes, aren’t family recipes the best?! Thanks for pinning!
I love chili and yours looks positively delish. The only kind I have in the freezer is WW. I’m sure not as good as yours, dear Shelley. I hope that you are having the gorgeous weather that we’re having. Enjoy your week!
So great to hear from you, friend! Hope you had a nice summer – and yes we’re having beautiful weather as well. In fact it was very chilly this morning! Thanks for visiting and commenting on my recipe!
Shelley, chili is one of our favorites. This version sounds really good. Great for watching football on Sunday. Thanks for sharing it.

My family and I love chili! This looks so thick and rich…and I love that it’s a family recipe! Pinned!
With our chilly weather the past couple of days, I made a great northern bean soup with bacon yesterday, yummy and thick, full of flavor and stick-to-the-rubs hearty for a cold day.
Oh that sounds delicious, Carole! Enjoy your weekend!
