The Boys of Summer

Many of you are sending your kids off to school in the next few weeks.  Here in New Jersey, the kids start after Labor Day so basically we have another month left of summer fun.  (Don’t be too envious though, our kids don’t get out of school until mid-June!)

Summer Vacation Thoughts

Anyway, the other night while doing laundry, I had one of those “in the moment” kind of feelings – (no, I wasn’t enjoying the laundry that much!)… I was watching from the window while my boys and the neighborhood kids played baseball in our backyard.  My husband helped them out a few times with some pointers and encouragement, but it was mostly boys just having fun…while I observed and enjoyed my role as a mom.  It reminded me that this is what summer is all about…

It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.  – Laura Ingalls Wilder

These were my thoughts at that moment…

Sometime long ago
I knew it would be this way…

The howling laughter of a group of boys playing baseball in the yard,
The crickets have started chirping
and I am sure the mosquitoes have started biting
but those boys, those precious boys are having the times of their lives
on a simple summer evening
in our backyard.

The crack of the bat,
the yell of victory,
the sweet sound of giggling
And boys trying to make their voices sound deep
for an “Oh yeah” or a “Woo hoo!”

This is summer…
summer that I have always dreamed it would be
with boys
in the backyard
playing baseball.

And a doggie
who wishes she could join them!

Oh, to freeze time.

We can all agree,
that life is not perfect
but moments like these sure are…

Green grass of summer

It really was a perfect day.  The stars must have completely aligned and allowed my husband to work from home on one the most beautiful days of the summer so far.  He took my older son on a 3 1/2 mile run in the morning (and allowed my 7 year old to join them for the last 1/2 mile).  The temperature was perfect yet cool enough so I didn’t need to turn the air conditioning on at all.  The windows stayed open all day allowing a cool breeze to infiltrate our home with summer sweetness.  I took the kids to miniature golf in the afternoon and we decided to pick up Chinese food instead of cooking dinner!  A win-win for me!  Not only did the boys enjoy a memorable game of backyard baseball, but we ended the evening with a couple rounds of chess against Daddy.  Seriously, it doesn’t get any better than this!

Days go by
I can feel ’em flying
Like a hand out the window in the wind as cars go by
It’s all we’ve been given
So you better start livin’ right now
‘Cause days go by
– Keith Urban – from “Days Go By”
