Painting the $20 Chair (Benjamin Moore Deep Royal)

Recently, I purchased a $20 Windsor chair at a furniture store closeout sale.  Since I had planned on using the chair in my son’s room, I figured I’d paint the chair a navy blue color.  Of course my son was worried navy would look too black, so we settled on the color – Deep Royal from Benjamin Moore.

Here is how the chair looked before we painted it…

Usually, I obsess a little more when I am choosing a paint color but since this was such a small project, I took my chances.

On the paint chip, Deep Royal looked pretty navy to me so I thought it would work.

Admittedly, I was a little nervous when I opened the can because it didn’t look as dark as I wanted it.  But once I started painting, I figured I would just go with it.

Luckily, I even had a little helper who just had to get involved!  After all, we’d be putting the navy chair in his room.

Then, of course my son caught the painting bug and wanted to paint everything in sight…

Oh well, the plain terra cotta pots were boring!  Actually, I love how they turned out!

Once the chair dried, we placed it at my son’s desk…

Perfect for a boy’s room – don’t you think?  Of course, from this angle, I think the chair looks very dark.

Here is another view with the sun shining in…

In the bright sunlight, it does look much more royal blue than navy…so I guess the name was correct!

But my little sweetie was happy And that is all that matters!

Benjamin Moore Paint Swatches - Navy paints

For reference, here is the Benjamin Moore paint swatch.  Deep Royal is the one at the top.  It goes to show that you really need to test paint samples in different lighting.  As you can see by the photos above, the chair can look like a dark navy or a deep royal depending on the light.  In bright light, I think the chair looks most like the bottom swatch!

Anyway, my son is happy so I’m happy.  Overall, painting the chair was an easy project…and we even got some pretty new flower pots in the process!

  • Update – since this post was written, we finished redecorating my son’s room.  Check out My Son’s Room – Before and After where you can also see more photos of this royal blue chair!

Have you ever used Benjamin Moore Deep Royal?

Oooooo, pretty….I mean rugged and boy-like. 😛 I have never tested paint. Sometimes I think it would be a good idea but I'm so indecisive that I think it might make things worse!

Thanks..I still have a lot of work to do on the room. He is seven now and the room still has a real little kid vibe to it. He wants to make some changes – and actually has some ideas too! He is just growing up way too fast!

It looks darling. I NEVER trust those darn paint chips. So frustrating. But the color is great!
