Area Rug Ideas for Every Room

Are you thinking about adding some area rugs to your home?  Since I have a few rugs around the house, I thought I would share what I like and dislike about the ones I own.  Hopefully, I will inspire you or maybe give you some helpful ideas.

Let’s take a look at the area rugs in my home…

Area Rug in the foyer

This rug in my foyer is synthetic and has held up really well.

The dark pattern of colors hides dirt which makes it perfect for an entryway.  It was also pretty inexpensive.  Now I won’t feel too guilty if I decide change it to something with different colors down the road.

Now, my living room rug is a different story.

This area rug is wool so needless to say, I spent a bit more on it.

I will have a hard time convincing my husband I need to update this rug, which is fine.  I think it has a timeless look and plus it’s in perfect condition.

It has a medallion in the middle so I made sure it was centered properly.  I guess it doesn’t really have to be centered but that is the way I like it.

Here is the full view.  The room has changed a bit since this photo was taken.  You can see an updated photo in my post, Simple Changes to Lighten Up My Living Room and then another update – The Clean and Classic Look of Plantation Shutters.

Oriental runner in back hallway

This runner is in my back hall, the spot that probably gets the most traffic in the entire house.

Although the black hides dirt pretty well, if your feet are dusty from the garage or if you have salt on your shoes in the winter, you see footprints easily.  (We have since replaced it with indoor/outdoor tile- looking rug).

The rug in my bedroom is a rug over a rug.

In a large room with light colored carpeting, this patterned rug gives a nice splash of color to the space.  However, it really needs to be larger.

The best size for this room would be at least an 8 x10 but a 9 x 12 would be ideal.

It would look so much better larger and anchored under the bed.  As much as I love the look, I will probably replace this rug soon.

You really can’t beat an indoor/outdoor rug in the kitchen.

It’s both pretty and practical.

Yes, two kids (and a messy husband) eat at this table everyday. I challenge you to find a crumb hidden under there!  It hides things well AND is very easy to clean…(It’s the Seagrove- Indoor Outdoor Rug from Ballard Designs.)

We don’t use the dining room as much as the kitchen so this one isn’t an indoor/outdoor rug.

The dining room is synthetic though, so between that and the busy pattern, I have never had any problems with it showing dirt.

But I have had problems with the the fringe, which always looks messy.

In fact, I have never really loved the rug…In fact, I don’t even know if I want a red dining room anymore!

I feel this way every year once I am done with the holidays.

The red was great for Christmas and Valentine’s Day but the rest of the year…I just get tired of the red.

I think maybe I want a seagrass rug in here…

Does anyone have any seagrass experience?  I like the look of sisal too but I read somewhere that seagrass is easier to clean.  My friend had a sisal in her kitchen and had problems with it staining.

If you are in the market for an area rug, I hope I have given you a few ideas!

  1. ShelleyI love your living room! So light and airy. We also have french door and similar wall colour in our living room. All your rugs are beautiful and unique. We don't have a seagrass rug but we bought a jute rug from Pier1 about 4 years ago. It's very easy to clean and we really like it. It has a similar border like the ones you found at pottery barn. The only thing, jute is not soft like your other rugs. I'm not sure what's the texture of seagrass rugs, but I can imagine it's similar to jute.Kinga
