Grand Cayman with Kids

If you’re looking for family vacation ideas, you should consider visiting the island of Grand Cayman with your kids.  For three years in a row, we’ve traveled there for our annual family vacation.  Each time, we’ve discovered more family friendly things to do and the kids have loved it!  Today, I’ll share what we love about the island…

Grand Cayman is a fabulous island for kids for the following reasons:

Easy Access from the US:

For us, Grand Cayman is a direct flight from Newark, NJ.  In our travels we’ve found that kids are much less cranky if they don’t have to wait around in airports!

Huge Variety of Condos in Grand Cayman:

Although there are plenty of beautiful resorts on Grand Cayman, we love the large selection of condos to rent.  Most of them are located right on Seven Mile Beach where you are just steps away from the water.  As a family of four, we love having the extra space…and you can’t beat the location!

And you can’t beat the convenience of your own refrigerator and freezer…(gotta stock up on ice cream!)

The Famous Seven Mile Beach:

Need I say more?  Each year, Seven Mile Beach is recognized one the best beaches in the world.  Over the years, my husband and I have traveled all over the Caribbean and this beach is one of our favorites!

Great Restaurants of Grand Cayman:

Not only does the island have a huge selection of great restaurants but most are kid friendly.  Each year, our kids love eating at the Wharf where they can take part in fish feedings and other entertainment.

Of course, if you go to Coconut Joe’s, you may have to put up with the occasional chicken at lunch!  My kids loved this…(I did not).

Iconic Rum Point in Grand Cayman:

Our annual drive to Rum Point on the other side of the island promises an enjoyable day filled with water sports, lunch and laying on the hammocks!  If you have time, this area of the island is a must see!

Kid Friendly Attractions in Grand Cayman:

Of course, there is the famous Stingray City which is pretty amazing!  So far, we haven’t taken the kids there yet but my husband and I visited several years ago. 

Close to the Seven Mile Beach area, you will find the famous town of “Hell”.  Known for some interesting rock formations, it’s basically a little tourist trap of a gift shop with a funny guy dressed like the devil.  Though, it’s still worth visiting once!

Although, my kids loved the Turtle Farm the most!

(This place has gotten a bit overpriced and needs to be taken care of a little better…but the kids love it!)

Another family favorite is the Bodden Town Pirates Caves…

Of course, the kids loved climbing around in the caves.  Although I think they were most amused when a parrot pooped on my husband’s head!

This picture was taken at the now closed Butterfly Farm but apparently the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is a wonderful place to visit.  Apparently, they also have a Blue Iguana!

Atlantis Submarines provides real submarine rides and glass bottom boat tours.  We chose the glass bottom boat tour which was cheaper, less scary and safer (according to me).  Somehow, we ended up being the only family so we had our own private tour!

Healthcare on Grand Cayman:

In Grand Cayman you’ll find “real” hospitals, doctors, etc – unlike some of the other islands where you might expect a witch doctor to ride up on a donkey…(Just great for a hypochondriac like myself ).  Seriously, things do cross my mind like what would happen if one of us came down with appendicitis or something?!

Low Crime Rate:

As a parent, safety is always a concern for me.  Since my husband likes to get the ground floor unit so we can walk out to the sand, it’s nice to feel safe.

So, if you’re looking for a place to take the kids in the Caribbean, definitely consider Grand Cayman!
